Date-Just

Launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch with a window displaying the date at 3 o’clock on the dial. This unique combination was further enhanced in 1953 with the magnifying effect of the Cyclops lens on the display. With these inventions, the Datejust embodied the quest for excellence of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, who believed that watchmaking progress should encourage human progress. In an era of great change, our relationship with time is shifting. Modern life is less connected to the seasons as we move to the rhythm of the passing days. The Datejust offers comfort as well as legibility and daily time management. Useful and practical, it was soon established as a precious instrument for the modern, independent, active wearer.

Described by Hans Wilsdorf as a technical feat, encapsulating all Rolex innovation to date, the Datejust also embodies a harmonious and classic elegance. Its inimitable and timeless style was enhanced with the special Jubilee bracelet, designed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Rolex. Featuring rows of five metal links, it is known for its fluid contours and elegant clasp, which bring further distinction to the model. In 1957, a woman’s version with a diameter of 26 mm (today 28 mm) was released: the Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust. As reliable as the Datejust, it concentrates all the attributes of the original model.

Submariner

In the 1950s, the exploration of the underwater world was no longer limited to scientists and the military. The Submariner was launched at a time when diving was becoming increasingly popular. The public’s fascination with ocean exploration led to the establishment of the first diving schools.

Waterproof, robust, technical and perfectly legible, the Submariner was designed with this new-found popularity in mind. It became the tool watch of choice for divers, giving them the confidence to venture into the depths.

At its launch in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was the first divers’ wristwatch to be waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). This depth was increased to 200 metres (660 feet) the following year, then to 300 metres (1,000 feet) in 1989. As for the Submariner Date, it was guaranteed waterproof to 200 metres (660 feet) at its launch in 1969, and to 300 metres (1,000 feet) from 1979 onwards. These successive improvements bear witness to Rolex’s unwavering efforts to push back the limits of waterproofness – a quest that began with the development of the Oyster case in the 1920s.

GMT master II

The launch of the GMT-Master in 1955 came at a point when people were beginning to move around the world faster and distances were becoming shorter. On land, at sea and in the skies, the relationship between time and travel was fundamentally shifting. Long-haul flights allowed voyagers to cross from one continent to another without a stopover. The GMT-Master accompanied the major transformations of its era.

Adopted by the flight crews of Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am, the GMT-Master came to epitomize the aeronautical watch and has since triumphed in other realms, on the wrists of world travellers.

Resistant and waterproof thanks to its Oyster case, technical and intuitive with its GMT function displaying a second time zone, it is the trustworthy companion of those venturing to new or unfamiliar destinations.

The GMT-Master carries its function in its name. ‘GMT’ stands for Greenwich Mean Time, which indicates the mean solar time as measured at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. Since 1884, it has been the prime meridian used to determine the 24 different time zones around the world.

The GMT-Master II, launched in 1982, fulfils the same function as its predecessor. The watch’s triangle-tipped 24-hour hand and 24-hour graduated bidirectional rotatable bezel enable the wearer to read the time in another time zone. The difference in the two models lies in the adjustment of the local hour hand. On the GMT-Master II, it is adjusted in one-hour increments – independently of the other hands and without stopping the watch.

Daytona

Behind the legendary design of the Cosmograph Daytona lies a modern story of Swiss watchmaking. Initially equipped with Valjoux movements, in 1988 the Cosmograph Daytona was fitted with calibre 4030, an adaptation of the Zenith El Primero calibre, the world’s first high-frequency self-winding chronograph movement. Rolex engineers worked to optimize this calibre – by reducing its frequency to 4 Hz – to guarantee its robustness and reliability over time. In 2000, the presentation of the Rolex 4130 calibre (which became the 4131 in 2023, or the 4132 on some special versions of the model) perpetuated the quest for excellence initiated by the brand’s founder, Hans Wilsdorf. Developed and produced by Rolex, it has proven to be particularly reliable and durable under even the most challenging conditions.

Over time, the design of the dials, the colour combinations and the architecture of the cases have been regularly reworked to reaffirm the elegance of the model. Its attributes also allow the Manufacture to demonstrate its superior expertise in some very diverse fields. These include cutting-edge technologies, with its tachymetric scale now moulded into the high-tech ceramic Cerachrom bezel insert, and gemmology and gem-setting, particularly on versions with a gold bezel set with 36 sapphires in a rainbow-like colour gradation. Throughout all of its versions, the design of the Cosmograph Daytona keeps the legend of this unique chronograph alive.
